It was nice to hear these familiar tunes in a new style. Of the new pieces, the highlight was a medley of character themes with different instrumentation to the original pieces. Some even managed to merge the rock stylings with vicious violin solos.

The concert also benefited from the debut of some brand new arrangements that made for a nice balance between the two styles with songs like the relaxing River of Life and the tense build up to the final battle in The Gate of Finis. The overpowering guitars had me all hyped up for the first performance, but the acoustic version played later in the night didn’t lose that much of the impact. The way that the composition piles on the tension before finally shifting into the cathartic cacophony that is the big boss music was amazing to hear in a live concert setting. It seems that the arrangers loved it as much as I do, since it was the only track repeated in the two different styles.

My personal highlight was hearing arrangements of the boss battle music, Decisive Battle II. But after a while the concert managed to settle into a nice groove. The difference between the two styles was initially jarring, with the performers going straight from a hard rock rendition of the main Octopath Traveler theme to a melancholy rendition of the Frostlands music. While the Break” songs helped to set a tranquil atmosphere, the “Boost” arrangements took a dramatic turn to rock music, with pounding drums and wailing guitars setting the stage for a much different approach. A mixture of emotionally-stirring pieces like Determination and more lively compositions like the jolly jig of A Settlement in the Red Bluffs surely caused the audience to embrace nostalgic memories… of a game that was only released last year. The “Break” side contained softer acoustic pieces arranged for piano, strings and clarinet. This means that the concert was divided into two styles of music. So when an Octopath Traveler concert was announced, of course I was going to journey across the country to attend this “Break, Boost and Beyond” performance with other fervent fans of the game.Ĭomposer Yasunori Nishiki introduced pieces based on the recent arranged Break and Boost album of Octopath Traveler songs. I’ve been singing its praises since it was first released and the game took out our top prize for the best RPG soundtrack of last year. It’s no secret that I love the soundtrack to Octopath Traveler.
